The AC/DC Backtracks Deluxe Box Set is one of the cooler box sets I have seen recently because you can actually play with the packaging! And I really do mean “play” the box that the collection comes in is a working guitar amp!
The Deluxe edition of the box set includes 3 CDs, 2 DVDs, and an LP that is pressed on 180 Gram Vinyl (yes!) the set also includes a 164 page coffee table book, and memorabilia reproductions. Here are some more details from the AC/DC website:
The comprehensive collection of the band’s studio and live rarities together in one place, remastered to sound better than ever (many on CD for the first time), on 3 CDs and 1 LP. 2 DVDs brings “Family Jewels” up to date plus the entire 2003 Circus Krone gig. A 164 page hard-cover book, collectible merchandise reproductions, and a working guitar amp make this a must-have for true AC/DC fans. Ships by 11/9/2009
The set includes three CDs: CD 1 is a group of studio recorded rarities:
These are all of the songs that the band recorded throughout their career that appeared on Australian-only LP releases, movie soundtracks, 7” and 12” single releases, and CD “tour editions”, etc. 12 of the 18 tracks are completely unique songs that have all been remastered to match the unparalleled sound quality of the rest of the Columbia AC/DC catalog reissues. The other 6 tracks are the original versions of classic AC/DC songs previously only available on the original Australian albums. Some restore seconds to the original fades, others restore guitar solos and choruses. All are highly sought-after collectibles and have never sounded this good!
While CDs 2 and 3 are live tracks that have also been remastered and many were not previously available.
The first of the two DVDs is a collection of videos that is called “Family Jewels, Disk Three” that starts off when the two DVD set “Family Jewels” from 1991 left off. The DVD has the following:
DVD number two is a live concert recording from 2003 called “LIVE AT THE CIRCUS KRONE” that was recorded in Munich, Germany and features the following set list:
Plus the coffee table book and memorabilia reproductions (button, stickers, guitar pick, etc). But the best part is the fact that the box is an actual working amp. I don’t see any specks for it on the site, but I have to imagine it is most likely a Marshall Micro Amp MS-2 minus the tone knob. But hey, who’s complaining!
I love a really well done box set and being a vinyl junkie means I have my fair share of them. The set looks very cool and the price is not too bad when you consider that you are getting a lot for $200. If you think that is steep, you should check out some of the box sets available at the “Artists in Residence” site. I am still planning on getting the awesome looking Pixies Box set from them (called “Minotaur”) but I will have to wait a little bit as the price is $495 plus shipping.
This box set is definitely ment for the serious AC/DC fan, but it is one sexy package. And to be honest, I just pre-ordered one - how could I resist? An amp, vinyl, a book, and a live show. Sold. Boosh.
